1. REDRAW
First we redraw all the lines, one by one, just as they are on the official map in order to explore the whole network. Every line is represented with a different color and the central north-south corridor is crowded with 20 lines making lecture difficult.
2. DISENTANGLE
We realign the lines in order to eliminate all unnecessary crossings.
3. REGROUP
Lines with common paths are grouped together and a common color is assigned to all lines in one group.
4. SIMPLIFY
Lines sharing most of their route are merged into one.
5. EMPHASIZE
With some more line merging and more contrasted colors the main corridor is now intelligible with only 5 lines representing the five main route choices.
>6. URBAN LAYOUT
For the bus map to better represent the city layout we want to add some geographic clues. Therefore we must redraw all the lines again, one by one albeit this time color grouped and geographically accurate.
7. SCHEMATICS AND FREQUENCY
The drawing is schematized with all lines aligned to a limited number of angles roughly corresponding to the main streets layout. The area in the central square where the network is dense and walking is relevant is geographically accurate. The periphery is out of scale.
The city center's position and pentagonal shape are emphasized for easy orientation.
Bus lines are classified according to their frequency, high frequency lines (5-10 min) being twice as thick as the low frequency lines (more than 10 min). This way users can better appreciate service levels in a particular area and plan their journey accordingly. 設計
8. NECESSARY INFORMATION
All necessary information is added: stops, labels, bus numbers. The basic map is now completed.
9. FLAVOUR
Carefully chosen additional information is added to the map to make it more comprehensive without cluttering it and endangering its readability: Streets, railways, transport icons, legend.
